Great sushi in Budapest
Today I tried Takebayashi on Belgrade rakpart, which is one of the best priced Japanese restaurants in Budapest. Having learned of their Sunday brunch service, I rushed over the first Sunday to get my share of sushi for HUF 3,990. The price could not be better because this is about the same price as the sushi buffet in Wasabi (another Japanese restaurant). Unfortunately for Wasabi, their sushi sucks, especially the rice. I have noticed it in many non-Japanese sushi restaurants that people are simply oblivious to the fact that you have to prepare the rice to make good sushi. So Wasabi is a definite no-no for sushi.
But Takebayashi has been quite good for sushi, even if not the best in town. But one has to admit that it is the best sushi in Budapest for the price.
So back to the Sunday brunch at Takebayashi. There is no table to choose from, only a menu. You can choose anything you like from the menu -- including soft drinks -- but for everything else you need to pay separately. This seemed like a fair deal so I went ahead and ordered a bunch of sushi combos and a few cold dishes. And this is when the whole thing went bad. I had to wait for 20 minutes for my sushi to come out and when I ordered the next set, I had to wait even longer. So unless you have a really entertaining company for lunch or a good book, you will be bored in no time, sitting there waiting for your food.
Having said that, the food was great, everything what I expected. But I will think twice before going back there because I hate waiting around. And the restaurant was not even half full -- imagine what would happen when it fills up.

Thanks for the info about Takebayashi. I'm always on the lookout for decent sushi. I can make the kinds of rolls that don't require fresh items, but I don't trust myself otherwise. I've been disappointed to find here that usually I can cook sushi rice better than most of the places I've sampled.
Have you tried the new version of Wabisabi? (I forget their new name)
hey, where is it exactly on belgrad rakpart? i've had some decent sushi at sushi sei and okuyama sushi, both on kolosy ter, but it was pretty pricey.
I have tried Wabisabi a couple of years ago but was not enticed to go back yet. The food was not bad but I could not blend in into the place. It was semi-dark, with "cool"-looking people, definitely not my crowd.
Is it any different now?
Sze,
Takebayashi is exactly halfway between Szabadsag and Erzsebet bridges. You cannot miss it if you walk on the pavement because you will have to walk around their tables.
oh, good thing i read this. A friend told us about Wasabi and thought we would visit the next time we're in BP. Ok, change of plans!
