Ice floating on Danube

I always wondered how big rivers get frozen, what is the precise moment when the surface does not flow anymore. These few days there have been large sheets of ice floating down the Danube, and I guess this is the early stage of the process. If the temperature keeps below zero, the river will be covered with ice.

The Balaton and other lakes are already frozen.
