Best Somloi galuska in town

My wife read somewhere that the Somlói galuska at Gerbeaud is the first or second in Budapest. We decided to try it, since this sponge cake is one of my favorites.

Gerbeaud was, as always, full of tourists -- a Japanese middle-aged couple sitting by the window, a larger German party around a few tables pulled together, etc. We did not want to eat in so we stood in line at the counter. To be exact, there was no line, only a single woman in front of us, buying a few cakes. But it took close to 20 minutes for her to be served, and during most of this time there was nobody on the other side of the counter. We stood there in our coats sweating, getting fed up with this whole scenario, but decided to bite the bullet so we can sample our sponge cake.

We got it, took it home. Ate it. It was not bad but definitely not one of the best I have had in Budapest. Not even in the top ten. Add to that the frustration when waiting for it and I can tell you that I will not only never buy another Somloi galuska in Gerbeaud but will not advise anyone to do that either.

I absolutely agree, Gerbaud on Vorosmarty Ter is the most overrated place in Budapest. Only its extreme central location allows it to get away with treating their customers with such contempt. Having been burnt by their surly staff on previous trips, I steer clear of the place and head to other patisseries now.

I like the word "contempt" as it describes perfectly their attitude to customers.
