"Nightmare" holiday at Lake Balaton
I met someone for the first time the other day and when she heard that I lived in Hungary, she immediately said, "I have been to Hungary." And then she stopped. Then we talked about other things but eventually she came back to her visit of the country. She had been with her husband and two daughters to Lake Balaton a few years ago but the whole trip did not turn out well. The house they rented was half-finished which, as she explained, was apparently quite common in Hungary. The beach was pretty much unusable, the water cold, and everything else was just not the way they imagined. She wanted to go and see Budapest but by that time her husband had enough of this country and voted against that. "It was a nightmare holiday," she concluded.
Now I wonder if it is really that bad. I realize that I complain about Hungary and Budapest on this blog quite often but there are clearly some good sides to it. Lake Balaton can be very nice, too. Of course, business owners there regard you as some sort of ATM whose whole existence is justified by making generous payments in exchange for bad service but if you can find your way amidst these obstacles, Balaton in the summer is definitely a pleasant environment. Or is this only my impression?
